HOW ALLIANCE
BUILT AN ARC

Fun Fact: We’ve been in the business of making our community a better place since the early 1980s! A group of our community members (namely: Duane Worley, Dick Lloyd, Geoff Hopkins, Jim Cadwallader, Bob Knight, Roger Schneekloth, Chris & Suzie Wilkinson, and John McGhehey) came together and said, “Hey! We need a community center. Let’s do all the hard work of assessing our community needs, identifying a location, researching facilities, and tirelessly raise funds in the hopes that our town can one day have a rockin’ place for recreation.”

Okay, so we paraphrased.

But really, they did all that work: the dream work, the leg work, and the plain ‘ol nitty-gritty work of putting community needs above their own. How do we sum up the history of the Alliance Recreation Center? Well, here goes: the AARC was formed in the early 80s, the Y of the USA charter happened in the late 80s, and today, we’re simply known as the ARC with a bunch of members  who have kept the dream alive and kickin’. That’s over 30 years of being awesome. Boom.

THE FOUNDATION

Early 1980s

We’ve been in the business of making our community a better place since the early 1980s! A group of our community members (namely: Duane Worley, Dick Lloyd, Jim Cadwallader, Bob Knight, Roger Schneekloth, Chris & Suzie Wilkinson, and John McGhehey) came together and said, “Hey! THE CHARTER

1990

We received our charter from Y of the USA! Thanks to the Hoegerl, Kimmel, and Wacker families, the location, known for 14 awesome years as The Courts, became the home of the Alliance Area Family YMCA. With those two “biggies”, a location and charter, off the list, the effort to hire the first executive director was underway. Dan Akeley was hired and the organization continued to grow.

THE EDITION

2002

By this time, the organization had grown SO much, it was time for expansion. Executive Director, Sue Gies, and a host of volunteers and supporters, raised money and donated labor to make it happen. Peltz Construction, the Girard family, Lyle Lurz, Dick Lloyd, and many, many others pulled together, pooled resources, and made the new edition happen. In addition to the previously existing racquetball courts, locker rooms, sauna, and steam room, the NEW edition included an indoor gymnasium, lobby and office area, weight room, and upstairs loft and group fitness room.

THE NAME CHANGE

October

Under new leadership, the Alliance Area Family YMCA decided to end the charter with Y of the USA and reorganize under the name, Alliance Recreation Center, paying homage to the group of dreamers who started it all. Today, the Alliance Recreation Center maintains a 501c3 nonprofit status and keeps 100% of the community’s monetary support  local.

THE FUTURE

Jan. 1, 2019

Our future goals include updating our facility, and if we’re really dreaming (and OF COURSE we are), we’d love to add an indoor pool in the future. If history has taught us anything, it’s that we can and will accomplish great things when we work together. Nothing is too impossible or too hard or too out of reach when we make the effort and remain vigilant to our cause. Here’s to many more years and many more historical slides in our future.
